History's Greatest Love Story
Said to be 'one of history's greatest love stories,' by Stylist, fashion and film are two very best friends. This is the reason why the interest that I have chosen to explore through the history of fashion is film. The particular interest that I have between the two is that throughout the 100 years that I have been asked to explore, fashion has got bigger and more popular in a sense that it changes year by year and film has played a huge part in the development of fashion. Without film, we can only see images of garments and not how they move on the body, with video we can.
You may not think it, but every outfit of every film you've ever been to the cinema to see has been chosen carefully and has been beautifully manipulated to put the message forward and communicate what the film is about, defining the era it was set in and most importantly, the characters and their personality. Because of this very close connection, the actors and actresses that are seen on our screens have become very influential in a sense that audiences have idolised them and their style off-screen and therefore created their own style through that. For me, I particularly enjoy watching films and looking at the choice of garments, accessories and hair styles they have chosen to use in order to portray a character. On another side of film and fashion, film premiers and award shows are a fabulous time to be able to see what actors and actresses have chosen to wear as it shows a reflection of their off-screen personality. The off-screen personality could be what the audience relate to more than the on-screen as the actress in the film might be completely different to the character they play. These premiers are also a time for designers to show off their magnificent work on a celebrity that is well known in the film industry as people are more than likely to know who they are and will genuinely enjoy looking at what they are wearing. Whether we like to admit it or not, celebrities are good at being able to sell and promote, they might not even realise they are doing it. This means that designers are forever being influenced by film to create new designs and accessories. High street stores mean that audiences who may not be able to afford the luxury brands have a chance at looking just as good as their celeb idols.
I am really looking forward to researching further about fashion and film and the connection that these two have. By the end of this module, I hope to have researched to the full extent of the history of fashion and film and using that research, created my very own zine.
