Photoshop Collages
In order to communicate my personal interest and something I am strongly passionate about, I chose to create two collages to show fashion through the movement of time and film – TV and movies. As fashion moves through time and history, we are continuously seeing a repeat in designs and runway looks. Both fashion in history and fashion in film are factors of how we dress now and influence our daily outfits.
In the Bottega Veneta AW17 ready to wear fashion show where the use of squared shoulders and the skirt that cut off just below the knee is briefly used. This suggests that women’s fashion from the 1940’s has creeped back into the modern day collection. The utility style clothes were usually made at home with old dresses or other clothing items in order to save the little money that families would’ve had during the second world war. This was the era where women adding shoulder pads in dresses or blouses was very popular. This created a broader shoulder to have a more masculine and strong look due to women stepping up and finding jobs. However, the slim, narrow waist was what kept the look feminine. As well as this military style dress, victory rolls in the front of the hair were worn to show that women were victorious during the war times. ‘The Edge of Love’ and ‘The Book Thief’ are both films to be set in this time period, showing the movement of the 1940’s style.
The TV show ‘That 70s Show’ and other films such as ‘The Virgin Suicides,’ ‘Lovelace’ and ‘Forrest Gump,’ are just a few that are set in the ‘70’s era. Fashion in the 1970’s was very eccentric and ‘out there.’ Strong fashion trends were bell bottoms, tie dye, midi skirts and fur. During the time of disco fever, both men and women were dressing head to toe in the most colourful of colourful clothing and pattern clashing whilst doing so. This was also the decade of the women’s tuxedo – Le Smoking, Yves Saint Laurent. This meant that women could now appear equal to men in the fashion industry. In my collage we can see that both Chloé and Calvin Klein have been inspired by the ‘70s era, with Chloé using the gaudy yellow and brown colours to represent the retro style of the decade.
I think it will be extremely interesting to gain further knowledge surrounding fashion and film and how they have come together as one. As it is shown in my collages, today’s fashion is heavily influenced by the film media as well as designs created many years ago, even if they are not exactly the same, elements may still be there.
