Sustainable Fashion
As our group was given the topic sustainability to create our poster one, we had a number of meetings to discuss our findings and start putting the information onto our poster. I particularly looked forward to meeting with my group when we made arrangements as before the task was given to us, not everyone knew each other well, however by the end of the task, we became good friends and worked well together as a group.
Sustainability in the fashion industry refers to materials that are sustainably grown fibres or recycled materials. These are just a couple of the ways the fashion industry tries to stay eco-friendly. Sustainable fashion also refers to how the garments and materials are made. Sustainability covers many issues such as, worker conditions, exploitation, fair trade, sustainable production, the environment, and animal welfare.
For our poster, we created a questionnaire in which we sent to family and friends in order to find out if they knew what sustainable fashion was, if they agreed with it, if they'd buy it and many other factors. In the bottom left hand side of our poster, we decided to create rip off tags with the results we had collected ourselves. We decided to use rip off tabs so that people reading the poster were able to take away a part of our poster and learn something from it. We also thought this was a good idea because it gives the poster a secondary use.
We looked into Stella McCartney, a well-known sustainable fashion designer, fashion waste and the amount of water that is used to make a pair of jeans. Some of the results were shocking, for example, it takes 1800 gallons of water to make just one pair of jeans. I couldn't believe how much water it took to make just ONE pair of jeans, crazy right? We also used some primary images to go alongside a reformation (sustainable brand) quote, 'Being naked is the #1 most sustainable option. We're #2.' The images give a raw effect of the girl being as close to naked as possible without actually being naked.
Overall, I think the poster came out well and we were all very pleased with it. Some of the facts we found were shocking to think of and definitely made me think twice about where I buy my clothes from and what I do with them when I no longer want them.
